Discover Response Spectrum Analysis and Equivalent Load Analysis for RFEM 6

This add-on generates standard-compliant seismic spectra and the resulting loads directly from the mode shapes of your RFEM 6 model.

You will receive equivalent loads per mode shape and direction, as well as superimposed results. The Building Model add-on also provides story shears and drifts. All spectra and load cases are traceable in the report.

Spectra are available for EN 1998-1 with over 25 National Annexes, ASCE 7, NBC, and other standards, or as user-defined spectra. The Modal Analysis add-on is required.

  • Generate response spectra according to EN 1998-1, ASCE 7, NBC, and more.
  • Define site-specific spectra or derive them from accelerograms.
  • Superimpose modal contributions with SRSS or CQC.
  • Calculate equivalent loads with nonlinearities or second-order analysis.

Your Advantages

Four reasons why engineers use Response Spectrum Analysis to verify seismic actions in their RFEM 6 workflow

Seismic Spectra for 25+ Standards

Generate response spectra as per EN 1998-1 with more than 25 National Annexes, ASCE 7, NBC, and other standards, or use your own spectrum or an accelerogram from the included library.

Traceable Loads From Mode Shapes

Equivalent static loads are created for every relevant mode shape and direction. Spectra, combination rules, and load cases stay visible in the model and in the printout report.

Nonlinear and Second-Order Analysis

Equivalent loads are written to load cases that RFEM 6 calculates itself, so tension members, nonlinear supports, and second-order analysis are taken into account.

Seamless Path to Seismic Design

The seismic design situation and its result combinations flow directly into the concrete, steel, timber and aluminum design add-ons — no need to rebuild seismic combinations manually.

Use Cases

As soon as your project is located in a seismic zone, the building authority will expect you to provide proof that the structure can withstand the seismic forces set out in the governing standard. The situations below are the most common reasons why engineers use this add-on.

Colorful result display of a multistory building frame structure analyzed with the response spectrum and equivalent load analysis in RFEM 6, showing color-coded deformations from blue to red along the building height. Colorful result display of a multistory building frame structure analyzed with the response spectrum and equivalent load analysis in RFEM 6, showing color-coded deformations from blue to red along the building height.
Multi-Story Residential Building in Eurocode 8 Zone

A building is located in a European seismic zone and requires a standard-compliant seismic design. The add-on generates the EC8 spectrum and transfers the seismic design to the design add-ons.

Braced Steel Hall with Tension Members

Tension bracing changes the load path under seismic actions. The Equivalent Load Analysis writes the modal loads into load cases that you calculate with the nonlinearities of the model.

Office Tower Checked as per ASCE 7-22

A high-rise building in a U.S. seismic design category requires base shear checks and drift limits. The add-on provides modal forces and story results without the need to switch to another program.

Plant Structure with Site-Specific Spectrum

The site's seismic report supplies its own spectrum or acceleration record. By entering it directly, the analysis remains traceable from the ground motion to the design forces.

Key Features

Dialog window Load Cases and Combinations in RFEM 6 showing response spectrum assignment for directions X and Y with acceleration period diagram according to EN 1998-1

Response Spectra

Select a standard and enter site parameters, such as ground acceleration, ground type, and behavior factor. RFEM 6 will then build the elastic and design spectra and document every parameter in the printout report.

Screenshot of the RFEM 6 calculation diagram showing load cases of the type "Response Spectrum Analysis"

Load Cases

Assign a spectrum and an excitation direction to the load case. Equivalent static loads are generated per mode shape and superimposed with SRSS or CQC, optionally including signed results.

Dialog window Load Cases and Combinations in RFEM 6 showing response spectrum assignment for directions X and Y with acceleration period diagram according to EN 1998-1

Spectral Analysis Settings

Define the modal combination (SRSS or CQC), directional combination, damping, and zero-period acceleration. Signed results maintain a useful sign for design purposes, and the rules can be compared within one model.

Data and results stay visible and editable, which minimizes the "black box" effect. This confirmed our decision in favor of RFEM.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this add-on on its own, or do I also need the Modal Analysis add-on?

You need the Modal Analysis add-on as well. It determines the natural frequencies, mode shapes, and effective modal masses, which the response spectrum analysis then scales and superimposes. The two add-ons are usually purchased together, and the modal analysis load case is created in the same dialog as the seismic one.

Is my national standard supported?

Most likely, yes. EN 1998-1 has more than 25 National Annexes, and there are separate implementations for ASCE 7, IBC, NBC, NTC, NTC CDMX, CFE Sismo, CIRSOC 103, NSR-10, NCh 433, NCSE, NPR 9998, P 100-1, SANS 10160-4, SBC 301, TBEC, IS 1893, GB 50011, SIA 261, AS 1170.4, DIN 4149, and DTR-BC 2-48. The complete list of all editions is available on the Standards page.

Can I use a site-specific response spectrum from my seismic report?

Yes, you can. In addition to the standard spectra, you can enter a user-defined spectrum point by point, or you can generate one from an accelerogram. The add-on includes a library of recorded earthquakes, and you can import your own acceleration record.

Are the seismic results transferred to the design add-ons automatically?

Yes, they are. The program uses the Combination Wizard to create the seismic design situation and the associated result combinations, which are available in the concrete, steel, timber, and aluminum design add-ons. You do not have to rebuild the seismic combinations manually.

Can I obtain story shear forces and interstory drifts?

Yes, with the Building Model add-on. Once the stories are defined, the seismic results are output for each story, including the center of mass, center of rigidity, shear force, displacements, interstory drifts, and sensitivity coefficients. This information is also used to check drift limits and determine the need for a second-order analysis.

Is the add-on available for RSTAB 9 as well?

Yes, it is. Both RFEM 6 and RSTAB 9 have the response spectrum analysis, with the same standards and combination rules. RFEM 6 also supports surface and solid models, which is important for shear wall buildings and slab structures. Currently, the Equivalent Load Analysis is only available in RFEM 6.

Do I need to be a seismic specialist to use this add-on?

No, once you select a seismic standard in the model's base data, the input dialog boxes adjust to it, and the program proposes the parameters required by that standard. You enter the values from your seismic report or national annex. However, interpreting the results still requires engineering judgment. The technical articles below provide complete examples.

Can I also perform a simplified equivalent lateral force analysis?

Multi-modal methods are available today, including response spectrum analysis and equivalent load analysis based on mode shapes. Simplified procedures, such as the equivalent lateral force procedure and the lateral force method of analysis according to EN 1998-1, ASCE 7, and NBC, are being developed and will be included in the same add-on.
