The Timber Design add-on allows engineers to efficiently design timber structures without any manual calculations or software switching.

You receive transparent results for every structural component: load distribution graphs, a verification overview, and design check details for load capacity and serviceability. In addition to entering equivalent member lengths, users also benefit from numerical tools, such as the eigenvalue solver for determining the critical bending stress. Easily create timber panel walls and slabs using the Beam Panel thickness type. The necessary beams, sheathing, and the flexibility of the fasteners are automatically generated in the background, without it being necessary to define them manually. As a result, you’ll receive design checks according to standards for all beams, sheathing, and fasteners at a glance.

Manufacturer Library for Cross-Laminated Timber Structures

From the manufacturer's library, you can directly load a wide variety of commercially available cross-laminated timber (CLT) structures instead of manually compiling them. All properties relevant to the structural analysis are automatically transferred to the timber design. Since the data comes directly from the manufacturer, no further adjustments are necessary—this saves you time and helps you avoid input errors.

Considering Elasticities in Connections

In timber structures, most connections are treated as hinged. If the user wishes to analyze the influence of connection stiffness more closely, a wide variety of coupling elements for the various structural components are available. The forces acting on the fasteners can be determined from these coupling elements.

The design of compression perpendicular to the grain is a property of the design support, which is defined directly on the member. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the design also include any cross-section geometries, or is it only possible to design rectangular cross-sections?

You can select and design a wide variety of common timber cross-sections from the cross-section library. If these are not sufficient, you can create user-defined cross-sections using the RSECTION program and then analyze them in the Timber Design add-on.

Is the load transfer in cross-laminated timber and wood-based materials uniaxial or biaxial?

By using surfaces, a biaxial load transfer can be taken into account, thus allowing for optimal design of the structural component.

Is it possible to flexibly connect members to other members or surfaces?

RFEM provides a range of coupling elements. In addition to the classic rigid member with or without a hinge, elements can also be coupled using nodal releases, line hinges, line releases, rigid links with or without a hinge, surface releases, surface contacts, and contact solids.

What tools are available for complex stability analysis?

For lateral-torsional buckling, an eigenvalue solver is available to determine the critical overturning moment. Lateral-torsional buckling issues can be easily analyzed using equivalent member lengths, with imperfections, or using the Structure Stability add-on.

Is the design of compression perpendicular to the grain performed?

To determine the effective bearing area, design supports can be defined, which are also taken into account in the design. Furthermore, the support can be reinforced with fully threaded screws, depending on the selected standard.

Can I use the add-on to design cross-laminated timber and timber panels?

Yes, you can. The timber design for cross-laminated timber (CLT) and timber panels is fully integrated into the Timber Design add-on. The Multilayer Surfaces add-on is required for modeling.
