Influence Surfaces of Ribbed Slabs

Influence surfaces are an alternative method for identifying critical load positions for ultimate and serviceability limit state design checks. In this work, the theory of influence lines and influence surfaces is transferred to ribbed slabs and examines four FE models with varying geometries and support conditions.

The influence surfaces are calculated using the RF-INFLUENCE add-on module of the RFEM 5 software and are compared with established reference tables and the load rearrangement method. The results show that the influence surfaces enable a fast and intuitive assessment of unfavorable load positions. The load rearrangement method proves to be only partially accurate for ribbed slabs, yet it still proves practical approximations.
